GoGrid to Provide Cloud Infrastructure for Big Data Architecture
GoGrid, a cloud infrastructure company, on Thursday announced that Brilig relies on hybrid infrastructure in the cloud from GoGrid for its Big Data architecture. A cooperative data marketplace for online display advertising, Brilig offers ad space in more than 7,500 consumer segments. Since turning to GoGrid, Brilig has decreased its infrastructure costs and increased the performance of its Big Data solution. “Brilig wouldn’t exist without the distributed data architectures associated with Big Data,” says Paul Cimino, the company’s CEO. “Big Data represents a profound change in the usefulness of the huge amounts of data we generate. The cloud is just as important. By running our solution using GoGrid’s hybrid cloud infrastructure, we’re able to process more than 300 million requests per day without tying up our capital in database or server hardware.”
“While there is still a lot of interest in Big Data Analytics, we see an increasing focus on Big Unstructured Data,” observed Tom Leyden, Director of Alliances and Marketing at Amplidata, in this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. And, Leyden continued, “Object storage is the new paradigm to store those massive amounts of Big Unstructured Data.” Agree or disagree? – "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility."
SoftLayer Offers "Private Clouds" at Cloud Expo
Dallas-based cloud infrastructure company SoftLayer announceds it Private Clouds solution at Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in New York this week. The idea is to bring the scalability of off-site (public) deployments to on-site (private) initiative for enterprise IT customers who like to control their infrastructure within the comfortibable, traditional local environment. "For some time our customers have used our portfolio of dedicated servers, network resources, and virtualization options to build their own private clouds. Now, with SoftLayer Private Clouds, instead of starting at square one, you begin with a pre-configured cloud ready for whatever you want to do with it," said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer for SoftLayer. "We've built our Private Clouds solution out of our experience creating and managing our own cloud, and our unique capabilities in automating sophisticate...

These scalable, secure and high-performance deployments leverage the company’s automated architecture, worldwide data center locations and private network, and customer-controlled infrastructure management system. “For some time our customers have used our portfolio of dedicated servers, network resources, and virtualization options to build their own private clouds. Now, with SoftLayer Private Clouds, instead of starting at square one, you begin with a pre-configured cloud ready for whatever you want to do with it,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer for SoftLayer. “We’ve built our Private Clouds solution out of our experience creating and managing our own cloud, and our unique capab...

Dell to Pay Dividend
In an effort to overcome investor hostility Dell is going to do something it’s never done before – despite the fact it had no R&D; to speak of – and that’s pay a quarterly dividend beginning in its third quarter which ends in November. It’ll pay 32 cents a year, a return of roughly 2.7% based on the stock’s closing price of $11.86 on Monday. The expense will cost the company about $560 million a year. Dell figures it’s got the cash flow, which has generated $4.9 billion in the last four quarters, to buy back stock and pay the dividend despite its nasty earnings and revenue slip last quarter. While still the world’s third-largest PC supplier, Dell claims it’s “changed the conversation we’re having with our customers. We are a solutions company first, vertically focused, and creating more value for customers with innovative offerings that provide competitive advantage.” At t...
Dell vCloud Trial Drives Cloud Adoption
Dell is throwing more chum in the water expecting customers will snap up its cloud. Back late last year it put VMware’s vCloud Datacenter Services on its cloud and offered American users a 60-day introductory trial to try out a hybrid or simply Dell’s public cloud for $999. Apparently it worked and now Dell is extending those trials through July 31 and adding Canada. A similar offer will be made to UK users – and any EMEA accounts not restricted by data residency rules – starting August 31. When the trial is over, customers can continue to use the vCloud widgetry in dedicated or multi-tenant environments and pay for compute by the hour or by the month. Kevin Hanes, the executive director of infrastructure and cloud computing services at Dell, says the exercise is teaching Dell how to sell the cloud. It all depends on getting people to articulate what it is they think they wan...

One of the most widely asked questions about Big Data today is, “How do we get valuable analytics from Big Data?” Or, how do we get the prize? As data continues to grow exponentially, so does the variety of data (structured and unstructured) coming from humans, machines and applications. In order to pull valuable information from it all, proper data gathering is critical, and the output of that data needs to be timely and accurate, with a flexible method of delivery. Unfortunately, it’s not easy...

Big Data: How Companies Transform Challenges into Business Opportunities
Did you know that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years? Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM. As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value. Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace.

What Is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
