Qualcomm Restructures To Protect its Patents
Qualcomm is restructuring to insulate its patents and its revenue-producing licensing business from the foibles of open source licensing. Apparently it’s been spooked by all the wireless patent litigation that going on worldwide because Thursday it said that parent company Qualcomm Incorporated will hold its crown jewels – described as most of the company’s patent portfolio – and license them through the Qualcomm Technology Licensing Division (QTL).
Google Copies Amazon [Update]
Google has copied Amazon and wheeled out an EC2 Infrastructure-as-a-Service imitator at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco Thursday proving the scuttlebutt on the money. It’s called Compute Engine and Google will rent out the spare stripped-down servers (Linux virtual machines) in its data centers to run third-party apps, putting its skills and gargantuan scale up for sale. It claims it’s “50% more power per dollar” than Amazon, which recently trimmed its prices. Google already has the platform-as-a-service App Engine and the S3-like Google Cloud Storage but the money is in IaaS. It’s said Amazon Web Services may do $2 billion this year.

Furthermore, the message that cloud services can deliver significant cost reduction is now resonating within the IT community -- cost saving has become a top driver for

Can Cloud Computing Open Up New Opportunities?
“There is a common view among media and analysts that the cloud computing market will see rapid growth in the foreseeable future,” observed Alex Mei, Executive VP and CMO of OCZ Technology Group, in this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “Companies will need to adapt quickly to these fast changing conditions as cloud computing continues to mature to meet the demands of IT and ultimately end users,” Mei concluded. Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? – "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility." Alex Mei: Agree. While driving down the costs associated with IT is certainly an important factor of cloud computing, the ability to create new ways for users to interact and access their data over the cloud is changing the very way that businesses can operate. The fact that cloud co...

Will Cloud Become the De Facto Standard for Computing?
“The recent TOSCA initiative has made interoperability for cloud computing closer than ever,” observed Andrew Hillier, co-founder and CTO of CiRBA, in this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “However, until players like Amazon and Google join in,” Hillier continued, “it will be difficult for organizations to move from one cloud to the other without risks to their data and infrastructure.” Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? – "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility." Andrew Hillier: Although savings and agility are both compelling benefits, it’s usually agility that’s realized first. This isn’t because it is a higher priority, but because it occurs earlier in the cloud adoption process. The push toward standardization and self-service can rapidly increase flexibility and ...
Big Data, Cloud Computing, Virtual Networking and More
“Exponentially increasing data volume, Internet access points and speed have made Big Data more accessible and therefore more practical,” noted Mike Carpenter, VP of Business Development at CARI.net, in this exclusive Q&A; with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “Add social media, mobile proliferation, cloud computing, and CDNs to the mix,” Carpenter continued, “and now it becomes the foundation of intelligence.” Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? – "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility."

Big Data: How Companies Transform Challenges into Business Opportunities
Did you know that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years? Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM. As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value. Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace.

What Is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
