Trusting Cloud Vendors
Using cloud by small businesses depends a lot on vendor reputation

By: Larry Carvalho

At the quarterly meeting of the cloud standards customer council held on December 13, 2011, Fireclay Tile presented their story on using Salesforce as a cornerstone of their success in leveraging cloud technology during challenging times. The presenter was Eric Edelson, the VP and owner of Fireclay Tile, not anyone from Information Technology (IT).  That is because at Fireclay Tile, there is no IT department!  All IT work is managed by line of business and delivered by cloud service providers.  Fireclay Tile pays by usage and hires appropriate integration providers to modify their package to suit their needs and buy add-ons from Salesforce AppExchange.

The presentation was on standard benefits that companies get from cloud technology. However, the “large enterprise vendor” audience challenged the presenter with standard objections typically raised by big companies: how does Fireclay Tile handle issues like security, portability, vendor lock-in, etc.  As a small business owner, Eric was stumped by all these terms but his response was very simple: he trusted his vendor.

This small business example is similar to how consumers trust our electric, internet and telephone service providers.   Local governments are expected to provide basic services like road maintenance and emergency services.  What happens when the local government does not provide services they are trusted with?  The representatives are voted out!  What if our cell phone provider or handset manufacturer fails to provide quality service and/or functionality?  We dump them!

My observation from the questions posed to Eric was that some vendors apply barriers faced by cloud computing adoption at large enterprises to small enterprises.  The trust factor that small businesses expect and obtain from their cloud service providers is causing the increased adoption of cloud computing at small businesses.  And if those cloud service providers do not meet that trust, those customers will “vote” them out by choosing another service provider.

The business transformation opportunities provided by cloud computing is being embraced by small businesses as evidenced by the Fireclay example.  Cloud adoption is being kicked off by organizations brave enough to making bold decisions.  Eventually, those technologies will be utilized long enough to make larger organizations start adoption on a larger scale. Look for a future post from me to explain the process of evaluating current business processes to determine fit for cloud adoption.

Citrix Buy Danish Collaborative Cloud Service
Citrix Wednesday said it bought Copenhagen-based collaborative work platform Podio to expand its social media offerings for SMBs, figuring there’s going to be a surge in demand for so-called social software by the enterprise as part of the consumerization of IT. Forrester estimates the market for corporate social software will hit $6.4 billion by 2016 compared with $600 million in 2010. Podio can be used by dispersed teams, contractors, partners, clients and projects in sales, recruiting, marketing or any other business function using pre-assembled apps from Podio’s free app market. Citrix says the widgetry unifies content and integrates traditional business apps and new mobile apps as well as the real-time and asynchronous communications required to work in the post PC era.
HP Takes On Amazon
Limping from losses, like in its executive suite, HP finally took its shot at Amazon Tuesday though it doesn’t like saying that. It announced an open source public IaaS cloud based on the immature OpenStack platform as it promised to do. It will offer public on-demand compute instances or virtual machines and scalable online storage with “accelerated delivery of cached content.” And all the while it can’t afford to alienate companies that buy hardware for their server farms. The betas of its Cloud Services should get here on May 10. And since they’re just betas, there aren’t any prices yet.
SAP, a database neophyte, means to throw a nominal $492 million at its Hana database analytics appliance to prove that it’s a database contender – at least in-memory Big Data databases – and make Larry Ellison eat his words. During Oracle’s last earnings call Larry said SAP must be on drugs to think it could take on Oracle in databases with a security- and recovery-lacking vehicle like Hana. SAP has designs on being number two – although Microsoft and IBM might have something to say about that – so it’s going to set up a $155 million Hana Real-Time Fund, managed by SAP Ventures, for start-ups to dip into to develop real-time apps and an ecosystem for Hana’s real-time data. As of last month it had 24 start-ups leveraging the Hana platform. Whether they got any of the money is unclear.
System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 as Private Cloud Enabler
VMM, a member of Microsoft System Center suite, is an enterprise solution for managing policies, processes, and best practices with automations by discovering, capturing and aggregating knowledge of virtualization infrastructure. In addition to the system requirements and the new features and capabilities, there are specific concepts presented in this article, although fundamental, nevertheless important to know before building a private cloud solution with VMM 2012.
Start-up Wins First Skirmish in Digital Postal Fight Down Under
The mystery of where Australia Post’s recently promised digital mail system is coming from has been solved. It’s going to use Volly, the sight-unseen system that Pitney Bowes announced 15 months ago but has yet to put on the market. Australia Post said so last week making it the first national post to sign up for Volly. It plans to roll out a Volly-based Digital Mailbox service to consumers by the end of the year. Australia Post was spooked into finding something fast by Digital Post Australia (DPA), the joint venture based on technology supplied by the American start-up Zumbox that came out of stealth mode last month and planted its digital flag on the continent ahead of Australia Post making its “me too” move. A digital solution should mean more cannibalization of Oz Post’s plummeting physical mail volumes and consequently lower revenues.
IBM Puts All Its Experience in a Box
In case nobody noticed, IBM put its reputation on the line the other day. It said it had distilled all the years of experience it got from tens of thousands of customer engagements around the world – and nobody can compete with that – into a box, an “expert integrated system” that it made every conceivable marketing claim about, beginning with making everything utterly simple. It said it was a snap to deploy, cuts application deployment time from maybe, say, six months all told to a month, and uses self-healing intelligent software to install, maintain, update and monitor itself and all its parts from operating systems through to applications to cut support costs. Blessedly the thing reportedly doesn’t need ham-fingered human intervention so IT can go off and do cleverer, creative things because it’s no longer worried about just keeping the lights on and spending 70% of its budget...
NTT Data, the service provider, has formed a business unit devoted to cloud services. It will be led by Marv Mouchawar as president and he will report directly to CEO John McCain. Mouchawar and his team will be responsible for the overall strategy, portfolio, sales and delivery of services. NTT Data Cloud Services is supposed to draw on the strengths and resources offered by NTT Data globally and in collaboration with the NTT Group of companies including NTT Communications, NTT DOCOMO and Dimension Data.
Cloud Expo New York: Redefining Cloud Computing… Again
The concept of cloud computing is about the ability for organizations to stop solving all IT problems by themselves. It’s certainly about sharing resources, such as storage and compute services, but it really should be more about sharing solutions and pushing risk out of the business. The focus now is on the former. Hopefully, in a few years, it will be more about the impact to a business rather than how the technology is defined. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, David Linthicum, Founder and CTO of Blue Mountain Labs, will look at what cloud computing is, and what it should be. The way it’s defined today and how should be defined tomorrow. He’ll focus on the emerging patterns of cloud computing, including changing business value and new patterns of cloud computing technology that are emerging. If you’re attempting to figure out the rule of cloud computing for your e...

Big Data: How Companies Transform Challenges into Business Opportunities
Did you know that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years? Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM. As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value. Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace.

What Is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
