Federal Government Defining the Expanding World of Cloud Computing
NIST defining the expanding world of cloud computing

By: Reuven Cohen

A working definition for cloud computing—a new computer technique with potential for achieving significant cost savings and information technology agility—has been released by a team of computer security experts at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Since the federal government is considering cloud computing as a component of its new technology infrastructure, it is NIST's role to evaluate it and then promote its effective and secure use within government and industry by providing technical guidance and developing standards.

The working definition of cloud computing described by NIST is "a pay-per-use model for enabling available, convenient and on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction." The draft working definition also describes five key characteristics, three delivery models and four deployment models.

The NIST cloud computing research team is studying cloud architectures, security and deployment strategies for the federal government. But its first task was to collaborate with industry and government to develop a working definition of cloud computing that will serve as a foundation for its research. The term "cloud computing" comes from the field's standard use of drawing the Internet as a cloud in diagrams.

Security is always a concern with any new computer approach, and this one is no different. According to cloud research team leader Peter Mell, "Cloud computing has both security advantages and disadvantages. The cloud computing model inherently promotes availability of services through its distributed architecture model. However, this same model presents data confidentiality and integrity challenges by pooling hardware resources for use by multiple parties."

The full working draft definition is available at http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/SNS/cloud-computing/index.html. Comments on the definition can be sent to cloud@nist.gov.

In a surprise move Tuesday Oracle wheeled out its Big Data Appliance. That’s the one it said in October would be ready sometime in the first half. Only nobody believed it meant early in the first half. Heck, it’s not even clear anybody thought Oracle could make the first half at all and it probably couldn’t have met so early a date if it hadn’t been secretly closeted for months with Cloudera. It’s using Cloudera’s version of Hadoop in the thing rather than lose time dicking around rolling its own. Cloudera is the oldest, most established of the Hadoop start-ups whose ranks now include MapR (tight with EMC, its Greenplum database and the EMC Data Computing Appliance) and Hortonworks (buddies with Microsoft and SQL Server 2012) and it’s assumed to have more customers and more experience than anybody else. Observers say Oracle’s use of Cloudera shows it’s serious. Big Data i...
CiRBA on Tuesday announced the general availability of version 7.0 of CiRBA DCI-Control, which enables IT organizations to see in a single glance where attention is required at the VM, host, and cluster level, and then provides explicit instructions on what to do in order to eliminate risk and increase efficiency. According to Andrew Hillier, co-founder and CTO, CiRBA, “The ability to know precisely where to place workloads and how to allocate resources enables organizations to run leaner data centers and achieve their financial objectives for virtualization and cloud computing.” Most organizations today combat risk in virtualized infrastructure by over-provisioning. Excess capacity and overly-conservative allocations create a costly buffer zone that erodes the ROI of virtualization and clouds. CiRBA’s Control Console reveals whether or not VMs, hosts or clusters have “Too Little Inf...

As enterprise adoption of cloud computing accelerates, organizations must have a strategy and plan for moving to the cloud. What should you put into public clouds? Should you create a private cloud? Should you use cloud applications, platform or infrastructure? How should organizations get started on the road to cloud computing? In his general session at the 9th International Cloud Expo, Rex Wang, Vice President of Product Marketing at Oracle, explored best practices for how organizations can move to cloud computing.
Brocade Communications Systems, which has tried to get bought at least twice before, is entertaining bids according to Reuters, which explains why its stock was up 8% Monday. The wire service heard from nameless knowledgeable sources that Brocade has gotten “first-round bids from a handful of potential buyers.” The switch maker has reportedly had Qatalyst Partners out looking for a leveraged buyout and Qatalyst is famous for bringing home juicy deals. However, Brocade is apparently no easy sell. According to Bloomberg Qatalyst has been looking for two years. Meanwhile, Dell bought Force 10 and HP bought 3Com. Reuters says Qatalyst was brought back in in November.
“There will always be people deploying private cloud infrastructures even if they’re then serving the product of those infrastructures to other people in the public sense. Boston targets private cloud and is offering a platform that is currently suitable for enterprises, ISVs, and service providers that want to offer clouds, usually in a private cloud environment,” states Phil Wainewright, Cloud Strategy Consultant, Boston Limited, in this SYS-CON.TV interview with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan at the 9th International Cloud Expo, held Nov 7-10, 2011, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Lotus Notes creator and Bill Gates replacement Ray Ozzie is working on a mystery start-up called Cocomo that’s recruiting in Boston and Seattle – well, at least it’s looking for a best-in-class lead UX/UI designer – for something mobile & social for consumers and that’s about all anybody knows about the operation. Ozzie e-mailed the Boston Globe last week to claim paternity – evidently his non-compete with Microsoft has expired – but indicated Cocomo won’t be prepared to explain itself for some time, perhaps not before it gets itself an office. The want ad on the Cocomo site, which makes Google’s home page look cluttered, says, “A new day has dawned as it relates to how we might interact with one another, and a handful of us are just starting work on a new communications product for this new world. We’ve got huge goals, pragmatic plans, and a sense of urgency. We aspire to deliver ...
OCZ Technology Group on Monday announced it has acquired SANRAD Inc., a privately held provider of flash caching and virtualization software and hardware. According to Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology Group, the transaction "significantly enhances the ability for customers to increase datacenter performance and efficiency by putting more virtual machines (VM) on a server without slowing down the VM's ability to access stored data, thus substantially lowering the overall cost of deployment.” SANRAD was founded in 2000 and its R&D; center is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. SANRAD currently sells its line of flash caching and virtualization software and hardware to storage and networking OEMs such as NEXSAN and Brocade as well as directly to the enterprise through its network of Value Added Resellers.

Cloud Computing Bootcamp at Cloud Expo 2011 Silicon Valley
Want to make sense of the hottest new concept in Enterprise IT? Want to understand in just hours what experts have spent many hundreds of days deciphering? Cloud computing is a technology that has rapidly evolving peppered with a lot of hype along the way. Customers find it hard to navigate through this and make sense of what aspects of this technology will give them real business benefit. Cloud Computing Bootcamp, led by our 2011 Bootcamp Instructor Larry Carvalho, is a great way to get a practical understanding of this technology. We offer multiple days of actionable insight into what vendor offerings are currently available and help you comprehend their strategy. The ever-popular Bootcamp, which is now held regularly around the world, is being held in conjunction with the 9th Cloud Expo, November 7-10, 2011, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA.
The Secret Behind The Incredible Growth of Cloud Expo
I can't comprehend that any event producer anywhere in the world today would answer this question by picking any one of the five available options presented. "A leading tool?" What do you mean by "a leading tool?" What other tools would you possibly have in this day and age? This question, the survey itself and its participants belong to the last decade. I personally don't use email anymore; I communicate through "Twitter." We don't do press releases unless we have to; we tweet stories to our roughly 12,000 followers in 8 channels. The news gets amplified to hundreds of thousands instantly. Even during Cloud Expo, we reach more people by Twitter than the announcements we make through loudspeakers in the convention centers. I would love to contact the people who are conducting this survey and ask them if any company answered their first question as "don't really consider it." In an age where I personally hail a cab at an airport through Twitter, I can't possibly comprehend which century bubble those people might be living in.
CTO Power Panel: Has Cloud Changed Enterprise IT?
Is there still a distinction between public, private and hybrid cloud? In this fast-moving high-level CTO Power Panel held at the 8th International Cloud Expo at the Javits Center in New York City, June 6-9, 2011, Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan discusses this and other topics such as cloud security and innovation in the cloud with Rich Wolski, CTO and Co-founder of Eucalyptus Systems; Vineet Tyagi, Head of Impetus Labs at Impetus Technologies; Bill Zack, Architect Evangelist with Microsoft; Scott Chasin, CTO at McAfee Content & Cloud; Mark Hinkle, Vice President of Community at Cloud.com; Logan McLeod, Director of Cloud Strategy at Dell; and Zach Smith, COO at Voxel.
A selection of some of the many themes & topics to be discussed at Cloud Expo Silicon Valley (9th Cloud Expo) - being held November 7-10, 2011, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA. The markets may still be melting, but Cloud Expo is definitely coming of age! In his Cloud Expo session, The Basics of Automating a Cloud Storage Service, Abiquo's Azmir Mohamed will be discussiong how the complexity of combining server virtualization with storage virtualization, automation, self-service catalogs and other enabling technologies has become a huge barrier for the IT teams who have to deliver the cloud services. The good news, he will be telling Cloud Expo delegates, is that some cloud vendors have recognized this issue and have partnered to deliver integrated solutions offering the flexibility and cost benefits of cloud on top of familiar infrastructure products. At the 8th International Cloud Computing Expo in New York City in June 2011, Jill Tummler Singer - CIO of the National Reconnaissance Office - answered the question: "Is Enterprise Cloud Computing for real?" In a follow-on session at Cloud Expo Silicon Valley (9th Cloud Expo), called Riding the Enterprise Cloud Computing Wave of Change into the Future, she will be discussing key elements needed for a triumphant enterprise cloud computing migration and highlight strategies (including security advantages found in the cloud) to ensure that no one crashes and gets caught in the riptide of this rapidly emerging technology.
Abiquo CEO Pete Malcolm to Keynote at Cloud Expo Silicon Valley
There is one constant in data centers: Application groups always need more. Until recently, apps have been at the mercy of IT operations to feed their need. In his Keynote at the 9th International Cloud Expo, Pete Malcolm will discuss how with the advent of public cloud offerings, apps can bypass ops entirely and get the resources they need with just a few clicks and a credit card. What does this mean for the future of IT ops? Pete Malcolm is CEO of Abiquo, a leading vendor of Cloud infrastructure management solutions. Described by SYS-CON's Jeremy Geelan as "a beacon of light amid the murky fog surrounding Cloud Computing", Malcolm is the inventor of the term "Resource Cloud", a concept which provides complete separation between physical infrastructure providers and virtual enterprise consumers, with substantial benefits to both. Malcolm was previously founder and CTO of Orchestria, Benchmark Capital's first European Entrepreneur-in-Residence, and a Senior Vice President with CA, Inc.

What Is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.

Top Two Technology Priorities for CIOs in 2011: Cloud & Virtualization
"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Currently, 3% of CIOs have the majority of IT running in the cloud or on SaaS technologies, but over the next four years CIOs expect this number to increase to 43%.
